Owl Memory App

Here is the Owl backstory found in the media pages written by Veeral Patel:

I got the idea for Owl while drinking Snapple Lemon Tea.

While most designers/developers relied on coffee to keep them awake, I relied on Snapple. The best part of this experience was reading the fact that came with it. However, most of the time, the fact was either a duplicate or not interesting.

The main goal for Owl is to emulate this experience in a better way. The facts are actually interesting and I promise that you’ll never get any duplicates. Try and make it a habit to learn something new everyday.
____________

Thanks for the advice “V.” The facts provided in his app are actually interesting – things that I didn’t know I didn’t know, and things that I might even discuss at the next party I attend. One fact that I’m interesting in knowing is the ingredients found in baby oil. After all, if olive oil is made of olives, then baby oil must be made out of… (Sorry. Couldn’t resist.).

The facts included in the app are hand-picked from reddit and all credit (or discredit as the case may be) goes to their awesome users.

cosmic-watch

Cosmic Watch

I really enjoyed learning about this app. Sure, it’s made in Switzerland, so it has that going for it, but I’ve found that it is much more than just a fancy 3D clock! It shows time for what it really is ~ our interpretation of our position and motion in the cosmos.

The app will help app users better understand astronomy and our solar system. You’ll be able to watch the real-time movement of the sun, moon and the stars or simply enjoy the beautiful design of the celestial sphere. Go back in time to discover celestial positions in the past or move forward to the future.

Find out what time it is anywhere in the world with just one touch – and what time the sun will rise or set there. Find out when the next cosmic moment, like a solar eclipse will occur. Astronomically speaking, you can navigate the universe by aligning the Cosmic Watch with the Cardinal Points.

Marcus, one of the app’s founders, was willing to provide App User Magazine with an emailed interview.

tippytalk

TippyTalk

I recently started watching a show called “Touch” about a young boy who can’t communicate with words. In the show they use a tablet that allows him to use pictures and numbers and translate them into words. Well, guess what? There’s an app for that.

The TippyTalk app is the first communication tool that removes the person living with the verbal disability from the limitations of same room communication and opens the door to the world around them.

The TippyTalk app allows a non-verbal child or adult to communicate by translating pictures into text messages which are then sent to a family member or care giver’s phone or tablet.

This incredible application allows the parent or caregiver to capture images that are uniquely identifiable and familiar to the person living with the verbal disability.

You simply take a picture of an object, place, or person and apply the appropriate text. You can also reinforce language development by recording your voice over each picture insuring the person living with the disability will recognize and understand the message.

This communication is not restricted by distance. The person with the verbal disability can communicate with whomever they chose no matter where they may be in the world, and in a way that works best for them.

TippyTalk is unique in that it removes the person with the verbal disability from the limitations of same room communication and by doing so increases and promotes communication, independent choice, and social inclusion while also reducing the frustration for the person and the family living with the verbal disability.

Zolt

This month we’re lucky to have landed an email interview with Rush, Founder of the Zolt App.

AUM: Thanks for spending some time with us. What did you do before Zolt?

Rush: Prior to Zolt, I used to work in finance where I often used to go through tons of paperwork and documentation only to realize the decision always hinged upon a few key points. I love reading, but when it comes to the news I also want to be updated on the quick. In that lay the cornerstone of Zolt. Also, as someone who has an (undiagnosed) case of ADHD I wanted to build something that would allow us to get updated quickly.

grammarly

Grammarly

We either learn words and sentences wrong to begin with or never learn them at all. Sometimes, we are not the ones to blame.

For example, why was my grammar school, you know, the one that took me from kindergarten through 6th grade, called Gramercy Elementary? No wonder I still mess up sometimes when I spell the word grammar. Thanks Gramercy!

But the Grammarly online app can help with all of that. It’s perfect for online fixes – like Facebook, Twitter, emails, and more. Grammarly makes sure that everything we write is easy-to-read, effective and free from mistakes.

This online app might get you to start writing everything online. That’s because it fixes 250 spelling and grammatical types of errors – most of which Microsoft Word can’t fix.

Grammarly also helps you enhance clarity and meaning when you write, helping you find the perfect word with context-optimized synonym suggestions. And if you pay attention to the errors the program fixes for you, you might even become a better writer.

math-galaxy

Math Galaxy

Who thought math word problems could be fun? This app offers a wide array of word problems in topics and levels suitable for grades 1-8. If players enjoy arcade-style maze games, it is a motivational way to practice applying math skills. Game play is quite complex however. Players may need adult assistance to learn the game well enough to enjoy it.

Overview
Math Galaxy Word Problems Fun is a maze-based app that encourages students to practice math story problems ranging from basic computation with small whole numbers through middle school/pre-algebra concepts such as ratio/proportion, signed numbers, geometry and graphs/tables.
Players send remote-controlled robots into a maze to find treasures and must solve word problems to proceed at certain points.

Features include:

  • Sixteen topics
  • Three levels of difficulty
  • Each player can choose individualized topic
  • Multi-player capability
  • Can save game to play over several sessions

Quality
Math Galaxy Word Problems Fun is a high quality app that performs as advertised. There are lots of ways to individualize the app, making it highly useful in classrooms or other settings where multiple people will be using the game.

Each player can choose a different topic, if desired. However, the game as a whole must be set to one level of difficulty. The ability to save a game is also a great feature, since game play can take quite a while. Players can also set their own criteria for winning or for ending the game.

The graphics are somewhat low-resolution, which may put some players off a bit. The directions are quite complicated, and it will take a bit of effort to figure out how to play, particularly if players are not already familiar with these types of arcade games.

Developers set up a system where players have money to purchase new robots when needed, and to pay other players when they land on the opposing players’ caves, but this also adds quite a layer of complexity to the game, which may make it too challenging for some players.
